“Auntie Allison, can we listen to ‘Bad Romance’? I love ‘Bad Romance’.”

I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. We listened to it over 30 times straight before something in my brain snapped & we insisted on switching to other Gaga songs.

One of my favorite movies is The Jerk (1979) with Steve Martin. There are many parts of this movie that I adore. One in particular is when the new phone book is delivered & Navin R. Johnson proclaims his excitement loudly: “The new phone book’s here! The new phone book’s here! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity I need! My name in print! That really makes somebody! Things are going to start happening to me now.”
In fact, I’m pretty sure I used that in my high school yearbook as one of my ‘senior quotes’. (If you haven’t yet seen The Jerk & have been pretending to me that you have, now is the time to come clean.)
I received a perk from Klout.com recently that gave me 100 free Mini-Moo cards. I went to design town, wrangled some of my favorite fonts, threw in a Dolly Parton quotation for good measure & waited for them to be delivered to my doorstep. Lo & behold, they are petite & just perfect for where I’m at. I feel a bit like Navin R. Johnson. Check out this legitimacy, folks! Things are going to start happening to me now.

Katzenjammer is a 4-member Norwegian band that mixes genres. There’s some folk + pop + rock + balkan. It is just good times. Also, they switch up which instruments they each play. & not surprisingly, a banjo is involved.

I know, I know. Everyone has probably had just about enough of me telling them to listen to Katzenjammer. Unless they’ve actually started listening to them, in which case they now understand how right I am.
From a recent UK interview, when they are asked about the potential difficulties of being an all-girl band in the music industry:
We hardly think about the fact that we’re a girl band. The word feels wrong in a way. We’re a band, we happen to have tits. In the beginning of Katzenjammer, we sometimes felt that people (mainly crew on stage in a new venue) didn’t treat us as they would treat the guys before and after us, but that always changed as soon as we started to play. Quite amusing to see their change of behavior, actually! We hope to be good ambassadors for girls who wants to play in bands, and expect that this will not be a question on the agenda in ten years.
They are toe-tapping good fun & look like they put on a hell of a live show. & it is always good to have banjo-practicing-inspiration so I can be in a cool band someday with my friends. Anyone want in on that?

Cynthia’s Grinchmas Challenge is all about choosing your own way (whether it be traditional or not) & feeling good during those choices. & this season – the more reminders of this, the merrier.
So this 8-track compilation is my Grinchmas tribute. It has some ups, some downs, & some grittiness…& some hope.

I’ve been thinking about dying my hair pink again. Whether or not that has anything to do with this music recommendation is beyond me…
I totally have a soft spot for female MC’s. Queen Latifah. Missy Elliott. Eve. & this past week, it has been all about listening to Nicki Minaj. I like a lot of her stuff. & she seems like she understands a lot of the (seedy) inner workings of the entertainment industry.

“When I am assertive, I’m a bitch. When a man is assertive, he’s a boss. He bossed up,” she says. “No negative connotation behind ‘bossed up.’ But lots of negative connotation behind being a bitch.”
